A Message From Corey

Our dear sister Corey form Colorado spent many hours in support with the Mobile Medical Clinic during this 2009 Lampstand effort. Below is a short synopsis of her experience. “Paul Renganathan’s work in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, includes a Medical Mission component, run in two forms. One is in a clinic known as Faith Hospital; the second is a Mobile Clinic, built under sponsorship from Healing Hands International. These clinics help provide free medical care to the poor in and around this city of over 9 million.

During the 2009 Lampstands evangelism campaign, the Mobile Clinic worked in nearby neighborhoods. Free medical treatment from one of two physicians was provided to anyone seeking care. Over 1173 children and adults were treated during the two week period. Six days worth of vitamins, antibiotics, and other medications were dispensed to each patient. Common health problems included upper respiratory conditions, due to local air pollution, diabetes, high blood pressure, and bacterial infections. Roundworm infections were common in children from some neighborhoods. Occasionally, conditions required more advanced care. At one location, a man with advanced tuberculosis was referred to the local hospital. At another, a woman with H.I.V. was given a consultation.

The Faith Hospital is a clinic which operates in a manner similar to that of the Mobile Clinic. It has operated for nearly 10 years in the Chennai neighborhood, Choolameidoo. During its operation, the clinic treated 70 to 100 patients per day and dispensed 3 days of medication to each patient. Many patients were local elderly people for whom travel to a more distant medical facility would be difficult. Unfortunately, the Faith Hospital’s operating funds ran out at the end of 2008, so the clinic has been closed.

Both of these important community outreach services rely on monetary support from individuals in order to operate. We are grateful for all who have contributed to this important work! Further, we encourage everyone to consider contributing funds so that care for the poor can continue.”
